Barbados

Vet requirements, airline rules & what to expect at the border

Verified 7 July 2026 · Checked against official government sources

Official Import Rules

Barbados requires an ISO microchip, a current rabies vaccination, a government-endorsed veterinary health certificate, and an import permit from the Chief Veterinary Officer.

  • A wait of 35 days must pass from the date of a primary rabies vaccination (or revaccination after an expired or missed booster) before the cat is eligible to enter. The day of vaccination counts as day 0.
  • The veterinary examination and Official Veterinary Export Health Certificate must be completed within 7 days of travel. The certificate is valid for 10 days from the date of endorsement by the Official Veterinarian.
  • For the import permit, apply before travel and give at least 3 working days' notice of the animal's expected arrival date and time to Veterinary Services. No official Barbados government source specifies a 4-week lead time.
  • Cats do not require parasite treatment to enter Barbados. Parasite treatment (ticks and tapeworms, within 7 days of travel) is a requirement for dogs only.
  • FVRCP vaccination is not listed as an official import requirement by the Barbados Veterinary Services Department or USDA APHIS. No official government source includes it as a mandatory condition for entry.

Arrival through Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI).

City & Housing Tips

Bridgetown and the south/west coast are the main residential areas. Barbados has a small but active pet community. Vet care is adequate for routine needs. The island is compact — everything is within 30 minutes drive.

Vets & Common Parasites

Adequate vet care for routine needs. Several clinics on the island, with the best concentrated around Bridgetown. For specialist care, evacuation to Trinidad or the US mainland may be necessary.
